Gynaecology

Gynaecology is the specialty that looks after the female reproductive system. A gynaecologist applies medical and surgical therapies to treat conditions involving the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva. Some examples are: fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cyst, endometrial polyps, irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, infertility, infections, polycystic ovaries, menopause and others.


Obstetrics

Obstetrics is combined with gynaecology under the same surgical field, but it focuses on pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period. An obstetrician looks after the pre and post-natal care and its various complications monitoring the pregnancy and dealing with some possible intercurrent diseases such as diabetes and hyper-coagulability. Obstetric emergencies include ectopic pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, placental abruption, foetal distress, shoulder dystocia, uterine rupture, prolapsed cord, obstetrical haemorrhage and puerperal sepsis.
